Bungalows 1912-1928

A relaxed style originating in California, the bungalow has been described as the perfect suburban design.

Like the villa, it was built from native timber, with timber wall linings (sarking) covered by scrim and paper. These wall linings should be replaced. Bungalows were uninsulated and tend to be cold and draughty. Relining the walls is the perfect opportunity to remedy both problems.

Upmarket bungalows often feature native timber decorative paneling in hallways and entrances. Paneling and ornate trims are difficult to replace, and should be removed with care, or worked around. Most ceilings will be fibrous plaster. Cornices (decorative mouldings that join ceilings and walls) will generally be fairly ornate. As an integral part of the bungalow design they are worth retaining, even if it means spending money on having them repaired.
