Before you can determine accurately the overall cost of the project you will need to decide on the building materials that will be used throughout the project.
At every level the selection of the products used may influence the cost, durability of the item, warranties offered, availability etc. Where possible stick to reputable brands that have the market support in New Zealand. Although you may save initially on a cheaper option, if the product fails it is likely to cost you a lot more to rectify in the future.
If you are using a professional designer or architect they will generally have a range of options for you to select from. If you are doing the materials selection yourself find out about each item carefully as each option may vary significantly in what it offers.
Building merchants can also assist to give you a range of options and the cost associated with each item. They can also assist in advising what other items you might require, given the type of project your undertaking.
Although it is easy to focus on the fixtures and fittings e.g. the new taps for the bathroom or the new cabinetry in the kitchen, it is just as important to select the products that you will not see.
If you are renovating your bathroom determine the correct plumbing pipes to be used and invest in quality, as a pipe that fails behind the wall will be more expensive to replace than changing the new designer taps. If you are considering converting a lounge into a home theatre room get some advice on noise control. Factors to consider will include acoustic door seals, acoustic insulation and noise control GIB® plasterboard (GIB Noiseline®)
